raised in Mr. Roberts-Wray's first minute of 9/6 are answered in his second minute on 29/6 resulting from a discussion with Mr. Griffin, while those raised by Mr.King and Mr. E. R. Edmonds in their minutes of 22/7 and 23/7 are answered in my minute of 7/10 (confirmed in Mr. Roberts-Wray's minute of 11/10), written after further discussion with Mr.Griffin.

2. In the event the points which remain for mention in our reply despatch are few. I think the draft covers them all, but Mr.Roberts-Wray will say if I have omitted anything which ought to be included.

3. The financial effect of the proposals (apart from the cost of one additional post of Legal Officer already covered by the Secretary of State's approval of the 1948/49 Estimates) is the cost of two additional posts - those of one Puisne Judge and of a Registrar General. The annual cost of

these posts in basic salary plus

expatriation pay (excluding cost of living allowance) is £2,110 and £1,830 respectively. But against the latter increase is to be set the disappearance of the post of Land Officer on a corresponding £1,705 per annum. I do not think reference to the Treasury is required; perhaps Mr. Palmer will kindly confirm.
